recycle Increased population growth in Florida, particularly in the coastal counties continues to place increased demand on limited water sources. The Water Reuse Program, administered by the Department of Environmental Protection, opens in new window develops uses for reclaimed water from waste water treatment plants.
Beneficial uses for reclaimed include: irrigation, watering of golf courses and lawns, aquifer recharge, and wetlands replenishment. All of these uses reduce demand on our stretched drinking water sources.

BUT ..... reclaimed water, although treated, is not potable water. It may look clean and smell clean and even taste clean, but it does not meet safe drinking water standards and may harbor coliform bacteria, viruses, and harmful protozoa such Cryptosporidium and Giardia lambia. These microorganisms cause severe intestinal illness, particularly in children and seniors.

Everyone should be aware of potential health problems associated with direct contact with reuse water. Children should be warned against drinking from hoses or playing in sprinklers or runoff in areas where reuse water is being used for irrigation of lawns.
