Bacteria Testing and Remediation Requirements

Is bacteria present?
Step 1. If the results of a quarterly or new construction bacteria sample are positive or too numerous to count (TNTC), take another sample on the next business day.
Step 2. If the results of the second bacteria sample are negative-Stop.
Step 3. If the results of the second bacteria sample are positive, determine if the bacteria is in the system or in the well.
What is the source of the bacteria contamination?
Step 1. To confirm that the source of bacteria contamination is in the system, collect one sample from the well and a repeat sample from the same location that originally indicated contamination was present.
Step 2. If the sample taken at the well is negative and the repeat sample taken at the system location is positive, then the contamination is in the water system.
How do I remediate bacteria contamination in the water system?
Step 1. Disinfect the water system.
Conduct a two-consecutive day bacteria sampling. Two water samples may be collected on the same day if they are taken six or more hours apart and the well is purged for 15 minutes prior to collecting each sample.
Step 2. If bacteria contamination is still present in the water system, disinfection equipment will have to be permanently installed to the system.

How do I remediate bacteria contamination in the well?

Step 1. Disinfect the well and the water system.
Step 2. Conduct a five-consecutive day bacteria sampling. Two water samples may be collected on the same day if they are taken six or more hours apart and the well is purged for 15 minutes prior to collecting each sample.
Step 3.

If bacteria contamination is still present in the well, disinfection equipment will have to be permanently installed to the system.

Note: If Coliform bacteria are present in the second sample and fecal Coliform are present in the first or any subsequent sample in the cycle, immediately notify all water supply users and provide an alternative water supply
