Florida Injury Prevention Advisory CouncilOverviewRecognizing that injuries are the leading cause of death among Floridians ages 1–44 and the third leading cause of death overall, after heart disease and cancer, the Department of Health’s Office of Injury Prevention (Office) has established the following long-term goals:
In 2003, the Office provided the leadership to create a strategic injury prevention plan that serves as a road map for future efforts to reduce Florida’s injury burden. The Office began a strategic planning process involving more than 220 injury prevention advocates to draft the 2004–2008 Florida Injury Prevention Strategic Plan and supporting action plans. The 2004–2008 Florida Injury Prevention Advisory Council (FIPAC) provided input regarding the implementation of the 2004–2008 Florida Injury Prevention Strategic Plan which was concluded in late 2008; 74% of the plan was implemented. This state injury prevention plan was referred to as a "model" plan by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other injury prevention organizations. 
In 2008, as in 2003 for the 2004–2008 Florida Injury Prevention Strategic Plan, the Office brought together state and local injury prevention partners to develop the 2009–2013 Strategic Plan. The 2009–2013 FIPAC was appointed to provide injury prevention research and practice expertise, serve in an advisory capacity to assist in developing and implementing best practices, and to assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of the 2009–2013 Strategic Plan. Appointed council members and goal team members are assigned to one of the Strategic Plan’s five prioritized goals. This group of approximately 50 individuals includes representatives from six key state agencies, the medical community, injury prevention advocacy groups and non-profit agencies, university systems, research facilities, county health departments, laypersons, law enforcement, and health educators/injury prevention specialists.
